Comet A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas
Steve here. Cat and I went out to Ocean Point in East Boothbay, ME this evening (October 16, 2024) to see comet A3 Tsuchinshan-Atlas. It showed up about 45 minutes after sunset in the west.
Due to the extremely bright nearly-full super moon directly behind us, it was hard to see with the naked eye, but showed up well in binoculars and photos.
Cat got the photo above with her iPhone. I got the rest with my Canon R100. I've cleaned them all up in Lightroom to sharpen and denoise them a bit. You can click on any of them to get a gallery view.
This video is a timelapse image sequence of 15-second photos as it dropped to the horizon (or you can watch it on YouTube):
Then I turned around and got this shot of the moon:
The comet won't be back for another 80,000 years!
